Timing Belt or Chain?

Enter your registration and find out in seconds, including whether yours is one of the belt-in-oil engines that destroys itself quietly.

It is a simple question with a surprisingly awkward answer. Manufacturers rarely make it obvious, the handbook often does not say, and the same model sold in the same year can have either, depending on which engine it left the factory with. Meanwhile the consequence of getting it wrong is one of the most expensive failures a car can have.

There are really three answers, not two. A timing chain runs inside the engine and generally lasts a long time, though it still stretches and its tensioners wear. A conventional cambelt runs dry, on the outside of the engine behind a cover, and has a firm replacement interval. And then there is the wet belt, which does the cambelt job but sits inside the engine in the oil, degrading and shedding material that blocks the oil pump pickup.

Our checker reads your registration against the DVLA record and tells you which of the three you have. Where the record genuinely cannot separate two engines, it says so and we will confirm it against your vehicle for nothing, because an answer we are not sure of is worth less than no answer at all.

Timing Belt or Chain? Check Your Reg

Enter your registration and we will tell you whether your engine runs a timing chain, a normal cambelt, or a wet belt that sits in the oil. Free, and we do not ask for your details.

Why Does Belt or Chain Matter?

Because the three answers carry completely different bills and completely different risks. A conventional cambelt is a known quantity: it has an interval, you replace it, the job is understood and the cost is predictable. Skip it and the belt eventually snaps, the valves meet the pistons and the engine is finished, but at least the rule is simple and everybody knows it.

A timing chain is generally the easier life. It is designed to last, and on many engines it does. But a chain is not maintenance-free. It stretches over time, the tensioners and plastic guides wear, and the first symptom is usually a rattle on cold start. Left alone a stretched chain can jump a tooth, and the outcome is the same as a snapped belt.

The wet belt is the awkward one, and it is the reason this question has become worth asking. It does the cambelt job but runs inside the engine in oil. As the rubber degrades it sheds fine material into the sump, that material collects at the oil pump pickup screen, and oil pressure falls away. The engine is being starved long before anything sounds wrong, which is why wet belt failures so often arrive with no warning at all.

What the Registration Can and Cannot Tell Us

The DVLA record gives us four useful things: the make, the engine capacity in cc, the fuel type and the year of manufacture. For a great many cars that is enough. A 999cc Ford petrol is a 1.0 EcoBoost. A 1199cc Stellantis petrol is a 1.2 PureTech. Those identifications are solid, and for the engines where the answer really matters they cover most of what comes through the door.

What the record does not carry is the engine code. That matters whenever a manufacturer sold two different engines at the same capacity, and they did it more often than you would think. Ford used two different 1.5 diesels, one with a wet belt and one without, and both read as roughly 1499cc. Ford also revised the 1.0 EcoBoost during 2018 and 2019, moving the cam drive to a chain, so two cars from the same year can differ.

When we hit one of those cases the checker tells you it cannot be certain, and says why. That is deliberate. Telling somebody they have a chain when they actually have a belt in oil is the one answer that could cost them an engine, and no amount of confident-sounding output is worth that. Send us the registration in those cases and we will confirm it properly against the vehicle, at no charge.

Honest About Limits

Where two engines share a capacity, we say we cannot tell rather than guessing. A wrong answer here costs somebody an engine.

Wet Belt Aware

We flag belt-in-oil engines specifically, including the ones that run a chain for the cams and a wet belt for the oil pump.

All Three Jobs

Cambelt, wet belt and timing chain work all done here at Milton Road, with the right locking tools for each.

Ford and Stellantis

EcoBoost, EcoBlue, PureTech and BlueHDi are routine work for us, not a once-a-year job.

Fixed-Price Quote

Parts, labour, oil and VAT agreed before we start. No mid-job phone calls asking for more.

Common Questions About This Service

How do I know if my car has a timing belt or a timing chain?

The quickest way is to enter your registration in the checker on this page. It reads the make, engine size, fuel type and year from the DVLA record, which is enough to identify most of the engines where the answer actually matters. Where two engines share a capacity and the record cannot separate them, it says so rather than guessing, and we will confirm it against the vehicle for nothing.

Can you tell belt or chain from the registration alone?

For a lot of cars, yes. The DVLA record gives us make, engine capacity, fuel type and year of manufacture, and for the engines that matter most that combination identifies the unit. What it does not give us is the engine code, so where a manufacturer sold two different engines at the same capacity, a Ford 1.5 diesel for instance, we tell you it could be either rather than pretending to be certain.

What is the difference between a timing belt and a wet belt?

A conventional timing belt runs on the outside of the engine behind a cover, dry. A wet belt does the same job but runs inside the engine, submerged in oil. The wet belt degrades in hot oil and sheds material that blocks the oil pump pickup screen, which starves the engine of pressure. It is a completely different failure mode, and it is why the distinction matters more than it used to.

Does a timing chain mean I never have to worry about it?

No, and this is where a lot of advice goes wrong. A chain lasts longer than a belt but it still stretches, and the tensioners and guides wear. More importantly, several modern engines use a chain for the camshafts and a small wet belt for the oil pump. Ford did exactly that when it revised the 1.0 EcoBoost. So "it has a chain" does not always mean there is nothing in the oil to replace.

What happens if a timing belt or chain fails?

On most modern engines the valves and pistons occupy the same space at different moments. If the timing drive fails, that timing is lost, the valves meet the pistons and the engine destroys itself. Repair usually costs more than the car is worth. That is why the replacement interval is not a suggestion.

How much does it cost to check?

Nothing. The checker on this page is free and asks for no personal details. If it cannot be certain, send us the registration and we will confirm it properly against the vehicle, also free. We would rather you knew than guessed.
