The 1.2 PureTech has the worst reputation of any wet belt engine sold in Britain, and the 208 is where most people meet it. PSA has revised the replacement interval downwards more than once as failures mounted, and the engine drives its oil pump on a second wet belt, so there are two belts in oil to degrade rather than one.
The detail that catches people out is the opposite of what most assume. It is widely believed that only the turbocharged PureTech has the wet belt and that the naturally aspirated 82 horsepower car is safe on a chain. That is not the case: the naturally aspirated EB2 and EB2F run the same belt-in-oil architecture, with the same failure mode and the same revised interval. Only the Gen 3 48V mild hybrid, from 2023, uses a chain.
A recent registration is not proof of a chain either. Non-hybrid PureTech cars registered in 2024 and 2025 still left the factory with the wet belt. Does the Peugeot 208 have a wet belt?
Almost certainly yes. Both the turbocharged 1.2 PureTech and the naturally aspirated PureTech 82 use a belt in oil, and so does the 1.5 BlueHDi diesel. The common belief that the naturally aspirated car is safe on a chain is wrong. Only the Gen 3 48V mild hybrid from 2023 uses a chain, and even a 2024 registration is not proof of one. The older 1.6 BlueHDi uses a conventional external belt.
Why does the PureTech have such a bad reputation?
Two reasons. The belt material degrades faster than PSA originally anticipated, and the engine drives its oil pump on a second belt in oil, so there are two failure points feeding debris into the same sump. When the pickup screen blocks, oil pressure drops and the damage follows quickly. PSA has cut the recommended interval more than once in response.
When should a 208 wet belt be replaced?
Given the reputation, we would not stretch it. Six years or 60,000 miles is a sensible working maximum on this engine, and earlier if the car does short journeys or has an unknown service history. If yours has never had it done and is past five years, get it looked at.
Does the oil pump belt have to be done as well?
On the PureTech, absolutely. It is the point most often skipped to keep a quote low, and it is a false economy. Replacing the cambelt while leaving the oil pump belt in place means going back into the same engine within months. We do both, plus the pickup screen and a full flush.
Do you work on Citroen, DS and Vauxhall too?
Yes. The same 1.2 PureTech and 1.5 BlueHDi engines appear across the Citroen C3 and C4, the DS3 and DS7, and since PSA bought Vauxhall in 2017, the Corsa, Mokka, Crossland and Astra. They are also now in Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Jeep models. Same engines, same job, same approach.
